Welcoming Our Youngest Visitors: School Trips Bloom at Mi Flowers
Share
When the gates of our Camp de Masque Pavé nursery swing open to a busload of curious schoolchildren, something special happens. The rows of plants we tend every day suddenly become a living classroom — and we get to see them through fresh, wide eyes.
Over recent weeks, Mi Flowers has had the joy of hosting several school groups from across the island. From eager primary pupils to older students studying biology and environmental science, each visit reminds us why we love what we do. There is nothing quite like watching a child gently cup a leaf in their hands for the first time, or hearing the gasp when they learn that a tiny seed can grow into a flowering hibiscus.
A day among the plants
Each tour begins in our growing tunnels, where students discover how cuttings take root and how our team nurtures young plants until they are strong enough for a new home. We talk about light, water and patience — the three ingredients every gardener learns to respect. The children are always surprised to learn that some of our plants, like the ZZ and snake plant, can thrive on neglect, while others, like orchids, ask for a gentler touch.
Then comes everyone's favourite part: getting their hands in the soil. Students try their hand at potting their own seedling using our organic potting mix, learning how cocopeat and compost work together to feed a plant. Many leave clutching a small pot to care for at home — their very first plant.
Why it matters to us
Mauritius is blessed with extraordinary natural beauty, and we believe the next generation should grow up knowing how to protect and nurture it. These visits are about more than plants. They spark curiosity about where food comes from, why pollinators matter, and how small daily acts of care add up to a healthier island.
We are deeply grateful to the teachers who make these trips possible, and to the students whose energy and questions keep us on our toes.
